A tourist in Dunedin

Arrived early on a Sunday morning, picked up a rental car and we were ready to explore all that Dunedin had to offer.

Firstly off to St Clair for brunch and a look around. Plenty of surfers braving the cold and enjoying the surf. Next stop St Kilda , beautiful views along the beach .

St Clair , St Kilda and Baldwin Street

Then to Baldwin street . The steepest street in the world. Wow was it steep! Managed to make it to the top with a couple of stops along the way. I couldn’t believe how you could live on the steepest slopes of Baldwin street and drive up there everyday. Amazing !

The Dunedin train station is a step back in time with all its beautiful tiles and brick work. We were hoping to take the Taieri Gorge train but unfortunately it wasn’t going at the time we were there. Maybe next time.

The next day we ventured out along the peninsula to Larnach Castle . What a magnificent place to go . The castle has been restored and continues to have work done to it but the gardens are wonderful and the inside of the castle a must see.

The cycle way along the peninsula was fantastic and I wished that we had had more time to hire bikes and ride along this track.

Back to Dunedin for the best blue cod and chips I think I have ever had. The best café is probably not one you would walk into with its simple formica tables and old time chairs but well worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

Then to the Royal Albatross Centre for a visit to see the baby albatross and blue penguins . I absolutely loved to see the penguins come in on the waves to the beach at dusk. There must have been 50-100 penguins and the viewing platform allows you to get quite close.

A lovely walk around the Dunedin botanical gardens and then we were on our way to Te Anau .

So great to have so many fabulous things to do in Dunedin.
