New Zealand

Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland.

One of the most beautiful places on earth.

Te Anau is a great little town that has so much to offer . We stayed at Radfords on the Lake , a great room with views over the lake .

When traveling in Te Anau , you will notice the dinner sizes – Bailiez Cafe , Redcliffe Cafe and The Fat Duck all provided very satisfying and very large meals. Maybe this is because there are so many places to walk/explore and you need to be fueled to do so !

So the adventures begun . First, a 30 minute walk on the Kepler Track, we could have gone further but were waiting for a call from the seaplane company to let us know that they had some others wanting to share a 15 minute flight around lake Te Anau and the hidden lakes.

Then it was off to the Te Anau Glow worm caves . A 30 minute boat ride to some amazing caves where you needed to duck down to get through the caves to the boat where you ride along in complete darkness to see the fantastic display of glow worms.

It was back to our room to get ready for our next day in the Milford Sounds. We booked with Trips and Tramps, a day trip which included a walk on the Milford track and then a 2 hour cruise in the sounds. Milford Sound usually has about 200 days of rain a year, and it was one of those days that it rained. Although it didn’t stop us from putting on the wet weather gear and getting on with it . The walk was one of the best that I have done . It was so beautiful to spend 4 hours on this amazing scenic track . I wished that we could have continued on for another few hours.

The cruise provided us with views of the amazing waterfalls and sealife. It was lovely to spend a couple of hours reflecting on the magnificent walk and scenery that Fiordland has to offer.

We are so lucky to have such amazing places and scenery . I can’t wait to go back to do some more of the great walks of NZ.
